Classmate Profile:
Darah (Wendy) Wallsten

I guess if you remember me as Wendy, you might wonder why I changed my name? I never felt my first name fit me. As an adult, I became more involved in Judaism and decided to change my name to a Hebrew name. I have not used the name Wendy for 25 years.

I want to say thank you for the dedicated classmates who have kept up this website and keep us in contact. The only class of '78 people I have seen or keep in contact with since high school are Adrienne Hughes and Judy Harper ( I haven't spoken to Judy in about 5 years though). Bill Hoye (class of '79) and I remain friends-- we've known each other since elementary school.

I have spent most of the past 25 years in Northern California. I finished my BA at UC Santa Cruz and received my Masters from UC Berkeley in Social Welfare 14 years ago. I have been involved with "end of life care" for most of my career. I currently work in a prison, supervising an inmate HIV Peer Education Program and provide psychological care for inmate patients in the prison Hospice. I never dreamed I would be doing something like this when I was 18, but I love the work and find it continually challenging.

I have a dog, no children, and I have been romantically involved fairly exclusively with women for the last 20 years. I have been with my current partner for 4 yrs. She is a lawyer. I feel sort of weird writing some of this personal information, but I also believe as I get older, I have less tolerance for pretense.

T
he truth is, I have felt reluctant to attend one of our reunions because I felt I wouldn't be able to be myself or fit in (the reality is I never did think I fit in that well in high school either). However, I think that none of us could have lived this long without experiencing countless changes-- marriages, divorces, raising children, losing our parents-friends- siblings, starting careers-- ending careers, traveling, etc etc.. (In short, I expect none of us is completely what we seemed to be at 18). Having said all of this, I hope to learn more about you. Thank you.
