About a year before graduating from our high school, I had already formed ideas of belonging to an emerging field of service. Telling Dad of my curiosity and plan, (back around '77), it was met with his belief that this field was a dead-end job and existed purely due to sensationalism and its need would soon be lost.
OK, Dad, OK.
So I floundered aimless in local colleges and forgettable jobs. Not until 1983, had I heard of a school that trained people to become paramedics. The service I always knew I'd be perfect for.
After graduating from LA's paramedic and fire academy. I was hired on with LA City fire. After a few years I moved to Monterey, to become part of one of that counties first paramedics. A highlight of my career, is any one of the hundreds of times I've flown or driven through the Big Sur range. Twenty years of certain sounds and indelible sights had an effect.
While continuing to work as a paramedic, I completed my nursing degree. I now work in oncology, convinced that I'm still rescuing. In '96, I returned to southern California to work at this region's finest center for oncology. Eight years ago, I finally married a woman who has kept me focused. She too, is in health care - breast cancer awareness. Both Nan, my wife, and I share our recently purchased home in Brea with Brey, my 14yr old step-daughter, a spoiled chihuahua and a grumpy cat. I'd love to hear from anyone. Feel free to e-mail at p0006andingk@yahoo.com
