Classmate Profile:
Maria L. Martinez-Cosio

After graduating from Madison, I found my stride at UCSD, where I discovered that I love school (still a bookworm at heart). They finally kicked me out after getting my doctorate but decided I really didn’t want to leave academia- so I am now an assistant professor at the University of Texas in Arlington.

But let me back up.

After Madison and a bachelor’s at UCSD, I worked at KSDO Radio as a news reporter and weekend anchor where I met my wonderful husband, Steve, who was the producer for the Hedgecock show. We married in 1987, bought a teeny-tiny house in Clairemont and traveled the world. After ten years of marriage we were ready for kids, I was ready to quit my job working in administration at USD, and three months pregnant with Daniel I went back to school for my doctorate- with Steve’s patient support and encouragement. After defending the dissertation, I was offered a job in Texas- who would have thunk? Trading life in beautiful San Diego for hot, wide-open Texas (my students still ask me this at least once a week!). But we love it. We are blessed with so much here and as we mark our 5th year in Texas this summer, we continue to discover much about this historic, quirky and friendly place.

In my spare time I enjoy: soldering jewelry, gardening, bike riding and getting to know the numerous small Texas towns that surround our area. Steve and I, and our two children, Daniel (10) and Sofia (7) reside in Mansfield, TX, near Dallas/Fort Worth.

We are hoping to make it back for our 30th and look forward to catching up with y’all!
